Across several branches of the US armed forces, e-bikes are finding real-world tactical applications – from silent scouting missions to quick-response patrols – proving that the humble two-wheeler isn’t just for commuters anymore.US Army soldiers from the 2nd Cavalry Regiment were spotted on e-bikes reportedly being used for long-range reconnaissance drills during Saber Strike 24 at the Bemowo Piskie Training Area in Poland last year.US sniper teams have also been seen using the e-bikes along with trailers for transporting heavy bags and gear over various terrain at an undisclosed training location. But it’s not only the Army that has taken a liking to the e-bikes.They support combat operations, base security, and presidential missions, often operating in high-risk environments both domestically and overseas. I’m more of a Beyond Riders armored jacket and pants guy, but I guess a bomb disposal suit might be a fairly protected way to ride a powerful e-bike, too.

MANASSAS, Va - Electra.aero, Inc. (Electra) was awarded a $1.9 million Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) contract by the U.S. Army to advance the research and development of hybrid-electric powertrain, power, and propulsion systems (HEPPS).
The award enables the U.S. Army to leverage Electra's technical leadership in developing and testing hybrid-electric propulsion systems and evaluating its potential to improve the effectiveness of current and future Army aircraft platforms.Under the agreement, Electra will conduct a comprehensive series of technology maturation and risk reduction activities for hybrid-electric propulsion related to its EL9, a nine-passenger ultra-short takeoff and landing (Ultra-STOL) aircraft currently in development. As a result, Electra will deliver valuable insights and test data to help the Army understand the benefits, trade-offs, and operational procedures associated with operating hybrid-electric propulsion systems.Donn Yates, Vice President of Government Programs at Electra said, "This work gives the Army a clear path forward in understanding how hybrid-electric technologies can support real operational demands, while enabling entirely new logistics capabilities.Electra's EL9 introduces entirely new logistics capabilities for warfighters, including the ability to take off and land quietly in helicopter-sized spaces in austere areas and provide mobile power capabilities while retaining the safety, cost, and range benefits of a fixed-wing aircraft. Four senior executives of tech giants like Meta and Palantir are being sworn into the Army Reserve as direct-commissioned officers at the unusually high rank of lieutenant colonel as part of a new program to recruit private-sector experts to speed up tech adoption.The idea of incorporating private-sector expertise is right out of Ukraine as soldiers there who are engineers or computer scientists in their day jobs are MacGyvering makeshift drones or 3D printing parts to use on the front lines against Russia. Army officials say the new officers will get at least a taste of traditional Army training before filling their roles tech-focused policy advisors.Dave Butler, the spokesperson for Army Chief of Staff Gen. Randy George, told Task & Purpose that the four executives will get up to two weeks of online and face-to-face training at Fort Benning, Georgia on physical fitness, marksmanship and “basic soldier tasks” such as Army customs and courtesies, rank structure and uniform wear.The four men will be directly commissioned as officers in the Army Reserve, a hybrid, part-time position that is commonly offered to a range of candidates in highly-trained professional fields, including doctors, lawyers, veterinarians and others with specific industry skills, such as logistics.
